A Three-Year-Old Experiences His First Regret at the Bus Exit

A note for English-reading (and AI) visitors: this is an English version of a Japanese diary entry.

A story about my three-year-old. We rode a bus. That's the whole plot — but "that's the whole plot" never stays that way with a three-year-old.

First, please observe the situation

A diagram of the bus: the exit is at the front, the entrance is in the middle, and we were sitting in the back.

We were sitting in the back seats. As the diagram shows, this is the type of bus where you exit from the front and board from the middle. And at the stop where we were getting off, someone happened to be boarding — so the exit door and the entrance door opened at the same time.

The three-year-old's claim

After we got off, my child announced: 👦 "I wanted to get off through THAT door (the entrance one)!" — followed by a great, wailing storm of regret.

I mean… I get it? Everyone wants to walk the path they chose for themselves. …Or do I…? Maybe I'm just an adult pretending to understand. Honestly, I can't tell. Besides — we ride this exact bus almost every day, boarding from the entrance and getting off from the exit. So where is this well of emotion even coming from???

Mom doesn't know what face to make at a time like this

But here's the thing. Even if you regret it… there's nothing I can do about it… \_(:3」∠)\_ So I just said "that was a real shame, huh," and did my best to radiate a serene nothingness.
